As Williston gets more diverse, so does the Williston State Campus. With 1,000 students at the school, it is seeing a surge of students from different countries. Some come all the way from Japan, Mexico, and Kenya.
They say dreams are made in America. And it couldn’t be more true to these students from around the world.
“I love being in this place and my dreams are finally coming true, and they will be true soon,” says Esther Njenge. Esther is from Kenya and hopes to become a nurse some day. She says she’s getting an education in Williston that she couldn’t get back home.
“Here in America there is a higher standard of education compared to Africa and I like it,” says Esther.
Williston State also recently teamed up with a Junior College in Japan. The Japanese students are studying economics, ethics and cultural diversity.
“I like cultural diversity, because in Japan I can`t learn the subject,” says Amisato.
“You’re seeing diversity come in and you’re seeing the world come here, and we thought it would be a good idea to involve these people with our campus to work with the world and live with the world,” says Williston State President, Dr. Raymond Nadolny.
Thanks to the partnership, Williston State will send several students to study in Japan. Dr. Nadony predicts the college will also start a partnership with Scandinavian country in the future.
When I got here, we had about 11 international students and they were for the sports teams. These students are here for purely academic reasons. It`s good to have the academic mix, and it’s good to provide direct services to these students because what it has done is allows us to formalize our services to all international students,” says Nadolny.
Williston State says this year has the largest enrollment since 1997. Dr. Nodolny says more students are studying English as a second or third language than ever before.
